Food Review – The Garden Slug

Hey all! Managed to try out The Garden Slug few days ago but was down with a very bad sore throat and thus couldn’t consume anything ‘heaty’, except for the fact that I had actually forgotten that Mocha consists of both coffee and chocolate together, which I had ordered.
Caught up with my bestie whom I’ve known since sec sch days and glad our friendship is still going strong! Am also glad that she hasn’t changed that much compared to friends I’ve known, who have changed drastically.

Was really famished and I’d ordered the All Day BIG Breakfast. Here’s a little problem with me. I order like I’ve a gigantic appetite but most of the time, I can’t finish it! I’m quite a small eater, unless I really force myself to gobble everything down… For example, buffet times where I try to finish the food to prevent wastage charges. But mind you, I don’t take what I cannot finish. I’m not that kiasu alright.

But ordering ala carte makes me feel like I can finish everything on my plate which often is the otherwise.

So here’s my BIG bfast meal!

Photo 29-05-2013 01 52 17 PM

The food was served hot and that’s good. Scrambled eggs were a little too watery for my liking. Bread smelled great but I didn’t manage to eat any of it. Tomatoes were the greatest disappointment. I mean they tasted so-so, just a little on the mashy side but the appearance of them, ugh. Too shrivelled up which makes them look not so fresh, no? Sausages were so-so. Hashbrown was frozen food I guess.

My Mocha :

Photo 29-05-2013 01 50 10 PM

Not the usual mocha frappe I get from Starbucks so it was a notch down. It’s a Iced Cafe Mocha so it’s unfair to compare it to a frappe. But anyways, it didn’t taste that good. Sugar water was a little redundant as the coffee was already sweet itself.

Bestie’s meal :

Photo 29-05-2013 01 52 47 PM

Her sausages were exactly like mine. Tried a few small mouths of the mashed potato and didn’t like it. It tasted sweet. Like smashed up baby food puree with carrots.

Bestie ordered the lunch specials which I thought it was quite worth it. Only 15$, or thereabout.

It came with the soup of the day which was Tomato Soup.

Photo 29-05-2013 01 50 18 PM

The tomato soup was extremely ‘rich’ in tomatoes and surprisingly, it was from made from canned soup. It tasted more like bolognese  soup which you have on your pasta. Quite tasty. Worth the try 🙂

Bestie also had longan drink (as shown on the picture background) which I don’t think there’s anything to review about. Heh.

Food-wise is okay, still acceptable. But nothing super tasty.

Customer service wise, I’ve to rant a little. We were served almost immediately after settling down. But when we wanted to order, no staff was looking our way. The problem with the cafe is that there is only outdoor dining. No space for tables and chairs inside the cafe. They have tonnes of other stuffs displayed.  Hence, none of the staff were looking out. We were lazy to head into the cafe to call them either. But eventually, our orders were taken about 5 to 7mins of trying to get their attention?

Bestie helped me to get some salt from them and this time she walked into the cafe to ask for it. Calling for bill took some time as well. I just wished their staff could pay more attention to their customers.

The cafe is located near to many pet shops and clinics. So if you’re a animal lover, it perfects the ambience for you. You may bring your pets along to dine, but no pet food are sold at the cafe. Plus, there’s limited tables and chairs, so gotta bear that in mind if you’re heading down with with a large group. Ideal for small group catchups. It was a cooling weather with slight drizzle so it was hot and stuffy then.

Beauty Review – Hada Labo Whitening Lotion New Nano Formula

Hada Labo was very kind to sponsor me their new product – Hada Labo Arbutin Whitening Lotion with Nano Formula and I received it 2 days after receiving their email! Very efficient and prompt service :)

Of course, I’ve heard so many raves on Hada Labo’s products and because I couldn’t contain my excitement further, I tried it on asap on the same day of receipt! :)

  1. I love how it feels so light on my skin!
  2. Definitely non-sticky
  3. Bottle is made of plastic, so less accident-prone.
  4. Free of fragrances (bad thing? but might be good in the sense that lesser chemicals are added), mineral oil, alcohol and colourant

  1. Personally prefer to apply using cotton pads than hands/fingers (just a personal preference!)

Other than that, this Hada Labo Whitening Lotion with Nano Formula is great!

Beauty Review – Bio-Essence Royal Jelly + ATP SHAPE V FACE 3 Treasures

Sponsored Review

Introducing Bio-Essence’s latest beauty products that pamper your ageing skin, leaving it soft and supple and a slimmer face shape! Bio-Essence has just launched their Royal Jelly + ATP V face shape series and boy was I glad I was to experience them!

Photo 26-05-2013 11 30 27 PM

A little brief info on Royal Jelly :

The benefits of royal jelly for the skin include smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, evening skin tone, and ridding the skin of blemishes. It does not contain chemicals or artificial substances and will not leave a residue on the skin. This naturally-derived jelly contains a number of vitamins and proteins that nourish skin to give it a youthful glow.

Royal jelly is a substance made by worker bees to feed the queen in her first days of life to ensure her growth and fertility. It’s considered to be one of the world’s most nutrient-rich substances, packed with 134 nutrients, including essential amino acids, minerals and Vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, C, E along with Biotin, Niacin and Folic Acid which helps the queen grow to 40 times the size of worker bees and live 50 times longer.

The amino acids in royal jelly are also a basic ingredient in collagen, which is essential in maintaining the skin’s firmness by supporting the skin’s connective tissue. Royal jelly  can also help to reverse the effects of ageing in the skin by eliminating pigmentation as well as wrinkles. Royal jelly is widely used around the world, where it is known for its ability to enhance skin texture and smoothness.

Here’s my review on these 3 products I was sponsored with : Deep Exfoliating Gel, Radiant Youth Essence, and Face Lifting Cream

Bio-Essence Royal Jelly + ATP Deep Exfoliating Gel

Photo 29-05-2013 12 32 33 AM Photo 29-05-2013 12 35 40 AM Photo 29-05-2013 12 34 52 AM Photo 29-05-2013 04 51 49 PM

You need to know that exfoliating is a MUST for your skin, not only for your face but your whole body as well. It helps to remove dirt and impurities, unclog pores and remove blackheads, which thus promotes a fairer radiant looking skin!

Exfoliating with micro-beads might be too harsh on your skin and this  Bio-Essence Royal Jelly + ATP Deep Exfoliating Gel which does not contain micro-beads would be perfect for daily usage as recommended! I would advise you to use it once, especially at night before sleep, to remove the dirt that has accumulated on your skin after a day out. You can then use other products which are not for exfoliating purposes for the other time you cleanse your face, in the morning. Remember, you should cleanse your face twice daily. Once is too little and thrice is too much. Twice is just perfect.

Food Review : Mad Jack @ Simpang Bedok

Had a private date (FINALLY AWAY FROM FRIENDS) with the bf last Saturday after patronising expo. We WALKED from expo to simpang bedok and thank god I was on flats that day.

Settled down at Mad Jack. Not sure if it was me or the aircon, but the place was quite stuffy. Could be due to the fact that we walked a longggg way to get there but the bf said he didn’t feel it’s stuffy/warm, because even after we’ve finished our meals, my body was still burningggg. ODD.

Dinner for 2 + dessert.

Photo 25-05-2013 10 14 13 PM

Bf’s black pepper chicken chop. Was lovingly spoon-fed by bf of some small bites. Pepper was spicy for me. Fries were ok, stole some crispy ones. Peaches were sweet, most prolly tinned ones.

Photo 25-05-2013 10 19 02 PM

My Carbonara pasta. Expected bacon but ham was acceptable too. Wasn’t hungry to begin with but bf savoured this and kept complimenting how tasty it was. There were lesser mushrooms than ham and mushrooms were in thinly sliced strips.

Photo 25-05-2013 10 06 00 PM

Literally root beer + vanilla ice cream. We concluded that it was a waste of money. Could have use bought a tub of vanilla ice cream plus a carton/big bottle of root beer ourselves. Oh wells but anyhoo.

Photo 25-05-2013 10 37 55 PM

I bet this was bf’s FAVOURITE meal out of the 3. He went ‘hmmm hmmmm hmmm’ while savouring every mouth of this. I’m not really a fan of desserts. But this Mad and Rich Double Chocolate Fudge was acceptable, not too bad. But if you’re a chocolate lover, you would lick this clean I’m sure! 🙂

Overall rating :

4 stars

I’d thought rating should be hovering between 3.5-4 stars. Due to the stuffiness and not-s0-hungry moment resulted in 3.5 stars but perhaps with a chiller body temp and hungrier stomach, this place and food could easily deserve a 4 stars! 🙂

DIY gelish nails x normal nail polishes

YES! You’ve read it right! I’ve attempted to go all full force by experimenting using normal nail polishes and mixing it with gelish nail polishes (base and top coats).

I’ve always wanted to try using normal nail polishes as the base colour because gelish nail polishes are DAMN EXPENSIVE!!! It costs about $20 per bottle vs $8 (china glaze from DYON international – Cineleisure Scape)! I bought my 1st gelish nail polishes, top and base coats from gelish harmony from DYON as well 🙂

I’ve to first disclaim that the results might not turn out as pretty as gelish nail polishes or durable for that matter. But keep my fingers crossed anyhoo.

Here are the products and tools that were used.

Photo 26-05-2013 10 33 42 PM

Now, don’t say that I’ve not been sharing awesome deals (if you’ve been reading my blog, you would know I DO share great buys with honest reviews (not sponsored)).

Base coat, Top Coat and China glaze were bought from DYON International from Cineleisure Scape. I’ve even linked their Facebook page for you 🙂 How can you not love me eh? I’ve been getting most of my OPI and China Glaze nail polishes from them. China Glaze are going for 3 for $20! How can you resist?! Well, I couldn’t. So I’ve quite a handful of them lying around, which I thought might not work with gelish nail polishes or curing with UV/LED lamp.

But tadah! IT WORKS!

Laquee Rette Blue Purple Glitter were from Qoo10 – lovely.desiires

Cute Ribbon LED Lamp (18Watts) and Gelish Harmony Nail Surface Cleanse from Qoo10 – Crystalife

You can actually replace the Nail Surface Cleanse with lint wipes as well 🙂

How do you go about DIY-ing your own gelish nails?

I’ve actually blogged a detailed entry on this before, so please read here if you are keen 🙂 It’s actually not that difficult, except if you have to remove your previous gelish nails on your own (which I’ve also included a step-by-step in that tutorial post) and if you have shaky/retarded left hand like mine. Other than that, it’s pretty simple and hassle-free with LED lamps!

Here’s the final result!

Photo 26-05-2013 10 26 44 PM Photo 26-05-2013 10 26 20 PM Photo 26-05-2013 10 28 01 PM

A thousand apologies for the poor reso and lighting. The picture doesn’t do justice for the colours. I mean it’s not 100% salon-standard quality, but it’s still acceptable and pretty for a DIY attempt! I shouldn’t be so hard on myself… HAHA!

The purple base colour is actually much lighter than you see in the pictures.

I love how both purple base and glitter colours have a tinge of blue undertones and slight shimmery sheen! Both colour combinations kinda reminds me of fairytale pixie magical dust… you know what I mean.

Googled some images on the China Glaze Tantalise me so you actually have a clearer view on the colour.

A little short review on the products and sellers.

lovely.desiires : Spillage in 1 of the 3 bottles I bought. Delivery was long as items were mailed from HongKong. Took abt 2 weeks. Seller’s customer service was acceptable. Nail polishes were cheap compared to other brands such as Gelish Harmony. Honestly, I do not think the brand matters as well as the product works well for you and proves its worth. So far, the 3 Laquee Rette glitter UV/gel nail polishes worked well for me 🙂 But I can’t be 100% sure if its authentic? Nevermind that, like I’ve said, as long as it works well for me, I don’t mind if it’s non-authentic or an inferior brand.

Crystalife : One of my favourite sellers on Qoo10! Her customer service is superb! Replies very promptly. Her items have proved their worth thus far. Bought the LED lamp, nail cleanse and acetone. She sells gelish nail polishes with brands such as Gelish Harmony and Artistic too (20$ ++) and other nail art tools.

DYON International : maintains sales both online on their FB page as well as retail flea market booth at Scape. Takes some time to reply queries via FB and some queries were left unanswered and ignored. But staff at the booth was alright. Prices for China Glaze and OPI were quite cheap. Gelish Harmony polishes were market price. Bought a better base coat for strengthening my soft brittle nails at 30$++ but didn’t prove its worth, but gotta continue using it, no choice.

So yes, I hope these reviews were of some help to you. Like I’ve always said, sharing is caring. 🙂

And yes, in conclusion, YOU CAN MIX NORMAL NAIL POLISHES WITH GELISH NAIL POLISHES in this sequence (apply gelish base coat – cure it under UV/LED lamp – apply normal nail polish (I applied 2 coats) – cure it under the lamp (IT ACTUALLY WORKS! HAHA!) – apply additional glitter/nail designs (optional) – cure it under the lamp – apply top coat (u can apply 2 coats – cure it under lamp – wipe with nail surface cleanse/lint wipes)

Just hope this combination lasts though 😉

Braces Updates

It’s currently my 5th month into having braces on and frankly speaking, my patience is thinning. Other than being able to bite down edge to edge and have my upper row of teeth straightened, I don’t see any changes anymore. Due to other commitments, I had to cancel my dental appt twice.

That was when I told the dentist that I don’t think I can jump the bite or am seeing any improvements.

Hence, he informed me that I will be putting on braces on my lower row of teeth, together with elastic bands. I have heard from experienced friends telling me that those elastic bands would SNAP inside of your mouth if your mouth is opened too big and while you are chewing.

I am totally dreading this but I suppose that would be a very painful wake-up call if it ever snaps while I’m yawning. HAHA.

Apologies on the lack of updates for the month of April on my braces. Here are the pictures and comparison.

April 2013 :

Photo 28-03-2013 02 50 33 PM

Photo 21-05-2013 05 02 49 PM

braces apr n may

Okay la, it did improved a little. The gaps are narrower already, but my main concern and hope is for me to jump the damn bite!

My braces journey so far :

braces jan to may

Hopefully with the lower set of braces and elastic bands would help improve the situation. Dentist mentioned that putting on braces help to expand your jaw, thus the reason in putting the upper row first. As I have an underbite, my lower jaw is wider than the upper jaw and hence, protruding out. Putting on the upper row would help expand my upper jaw first. Putting the lower row is inevitable which would expand my lower jaw further which we do not want but will be curbed and controlled by the elastic bands.

Just thought I’d explain the rationale here.  🙂

Wish me luck!

Would wanna be a pretty bride in time to come! 😛

Food Review – Brotzeit

Had dinner at Brotzeit with the girls 2 weeks ago to celebrate 1 of their bday in advance 🙂

Photo 07-05-2013 06 52 56 PM

What’s a celebration without booze? We ordered original ones in 0.5 pint. Can’t remember the names because they were all german beers.

Photo 07-05-2013 07 04 25 PM

The sausages were alright except for the whitest one, it was mashy and disgusting. We didn’t finish that.

Photo 07-05-2013 07 04 32 PM

The pizza was alright but not for those who can’t take spicy, like me, because I fell into the chilli traps a few times because they were hidden inside, and then now when I relook at the picture above, besides the small green ones, the huge red ones are chillis too! OMG. How blind can I get? I’d thought they were tomatoes.

Photo 07-05-2013 07 04 39 PM

The fries were the tastiest! Not sure if they were truffle fries but they were comparable to mac fries! Highly addictive too! 😀

And this is us 🙂

Thanks for the invitation girls, really appreciate it. xoxo.

DIY Honey Mask

Aloha! Yes I am back and alive!

Asked me how did my exams go? I would say I aced 2 papers, did so-so for 1 and screwed the other 1  badly. I had 4 papers this time round. But results aren’t out yet and they always surprise me – in a good way! But the screwed up paper was really bad because *ahem*, honestly, I have been spotting topics and the topic I had studied didn’t appear! So you can imagine, how devastating the whole exam duration was. I nearly blew myself into pieces.

Before you jump into any conclusion, I am only spotting topics because I can. My masters course allows me to do so and I only study ONE topic for each module. It’s just how the whole exam system works. 2 questions, choose 1. And mind you, of course I did analyse properly through past year’s exam questions as well as to read through the examiners’ reports which were most of the time, unhelpful, like how the study guides are.

I have no lessons, lecturers, classmates to guide me so yes, I am doing everything myself. From registration matters to applying for courses via UOL’s website to applying for exams (except for the coordination of the exam centre – RELC), to studying, understanding memorising (okay fine, nobody can help you with this), crafting model essays (most lecturers don’t advise this only because examiners complain of parroted essays – but who can I parrot if I draft them on my own right? Not as if I copied from my classmates/lecturers’ ideas – they were actually a consolidation of my research and online essays :))

Yes, been doing this for the past 10 modules myself and 6 more to go, provided I pass this time round’s session. I am in a huge dilemma because I have no idea if  UOL would allow a referral should one passes a paper but didn’t score well. Yes, UOL allows referrals for law courses. And this time round, if I’m not wrong, a candidate can only refer once and must pass that referral paper, for if not, he/she would not be allowed to continue with the whole course.

Okay, enough of ranting about studies. Back to my beauty review! 🙂

So I was suffering from few breakouts here and there, especially on my chin areas and was really desperate to find a solution! You know how unsightly acne are and when I left home bare-faced, I almost dug my head into a ground when people could view my complexion at close proximity.

I wasn’t sure if it was due to the experiment on new beauty products (because usually I don’t have sensitive skin, but everything has its first right?) or was I purely just stressed out?

My complexion went through a toll ever since I consumed Skinbotics (you may read my review here). I’ve tried on new products from Korea – Zymogen and SK II’s Stem Power Rich Cream. Maybe it was too ‘powerful’ for my skin. But a friend told me that stem cells help to regenerate your skin cells from within so breaking out is usually quite normal. It’s sort of purging and although it does benefit your skin long time, I wouldn’t want to take the chance, having to go around and live with a face filled with acne. Ugh.

Will also be updating on the Zymogen and SK II products soon 🙂

So yes, back to the honey mask. With my desperation skyrocketing, I HAD TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

I did some research (amidst my own research for exams =x) and found out that honey is actually a great ingredient for acne treatments! Just google and you’ll see it for yourself.

Due to the lack of ingredients, laziness and time-constraint, I didn’t mix the honey mixture to other recommendable ingredients such as lemon, tumeric, yogurt etc. I just applied manuka honey on my face, paying special attention to the problematic areas.

Photo 10-05-2013 08 48 35 PM Photo 10-05-2013 08 48 44 PM

Photo 10-05-2013 08 49 45 PM

So I just used whatever Manuka honey I had at home. Mum bought the UMF 5+ one and already cost 60bucks++! She bought a bigger bottle one as well which costs 100bucks++!!! That’s how expensive manuka honey is, so I had to scrimp on the amount to use before she notice that I’ve been using it as a mask. Okay, fine I’d used it only twice. And there were obvious effects!

You can see how red and angry there were. It was worse the previous day I’d tell you.

Photo 10-05-2013 08 53 26 PM

Photo 10-05-2013 08 53 43 PM

I applied on my whole face and previously I applied on the targeted areas only, hence I was telling you that the acne were in a ‘better’ state than they were the day before. But I haven’t been pampering my skin lately and so I’d decided to apply honey on my whole face.

Things to note when using honey masks.

UMF® in an acronym for ‘Unique Manuka Factor’ and is an antibacterial property which is present in ActiveManuka Honey. UMF® is a floral property that comes from the nectar of Manuka flowers and has been found to possess extraordinary healing powers. This antibacterial activity is not present in any other type of honey.

So the higher the UMF, the more beneficial and effective it would be in treating acne. So no point using those ‘fake’ honeys with no UMF. The price would indicate its authenticity. Because raw honey is difficult to attain and process, hence the hefty price. Those fake ones are just simply sugars.

Honey has many skin benefits. Honey fights inflammation and bacteria on skin. It has healing property which heals wounds and infection on skin. It has moisturizing properties, which help to retain moisture for a long time. Honey alone can be used as face mask. To avoid sticking, wet your fingers before you apply the honey face mask. Apply and leave it on for approx 20 mins.

There are other types of honey masks mixed with other ingredients which you may wish to try out, provided you are not allergic to these ingredients. Some of the awesome websites I’ve found.

acne 2

Here’s a comparison on the before and after.

acne 3

With the help of honey and tea tree oil pimple cream (I’m using Mentholatum), you can see a reduction in redness as well as the drying up of the acne. When acne dries up, it means that it is recovering. For me, they usually dry out and itchy hands me would peel them off. I strongly urge you to refrain from peeling the scabs off, although I know how unsightly and ‘bumpy’ they look when covered and concealed with make up.

I must say that I am rather pleased with the results of using Manuka honey to treat pimples and acne.

You may want to try it too, someday perhaps? 🙂

Hope this helped you in a way or another!

Thanks for reading!
