Reflections on 2013..

I guess such a topic is mandatory as we close another chapter in our life – year 2013 and welcome 2014, especially since today marks the very last day and few hours before the wind of 2014 comes gushing out.

When I recall and reflect on the whole year, I can only think of negative thoughts.

2013 didn’t started out well and actually quite drastically bad, so much so that I still live in much pain every other day, till date.

I will not go into much details but I just hope that people can stop judging and shoot stuffs outta their mouths when they know nothing.

Some might know but not the full story because I don’t wish to tarnish the reputation of anyone deeper.

The incidents and problems have been affecting me a lot, really a lot, and I feel that it’s almost taking over my life already.

If you’re gonna say, “Huh? What? You look okay what.”

My question is, do you expect me to cry every min and sec of my life, snap pics of those moments and post it up for public to see? Or cry when you see me in person?

No right? That would be ridiculous.

I don’t know what really lies ahead.

And I feel that it gets more difficult as the years go by.

Sometimes I really feel like giving up, but it’s really not that simple.

And if you do happen to be reading this post, don’t ask, don’t speculate. I would tell if I want to.

Don’t jump into conclusions on baseless assumptions and build ideas of your own.

On a brighter note, all is not doom and gloom.

I’ve met new people, made new friends, grew closer to some, rekindled with a few.

And my little niece came along the way in Nov 🙂

And am thankful for the opportunities I was given in 2013…hoping and looking forward to many more to come 🙂

Top Tips to Beat PMS Cravings

For all the ladies out there, have you ever found yourself craving for certain food or discovered that you appetite has increased by truckloads when nearing the arrival of your period?

When I was younger, I didn’t have this problem, until only recently. Maybe I’ve also paid more attention to my body adjustments as I age. It is always good to listen to your body for it may be hinting you on certain issues.

For me, I would experience tremendous hunger pangs a week or so before my estimated date of period (EDP – yeah I made that up LOL). I would crave for fried bee hoon and sweet stuffs, it’s actually damn annoying because it’s very fattening and I always feel so guilty after gobbling them down and yet still reach out for another fattening food few hours later. Honestly, I really loathe myself for doing that but I just can’t stop and help myself…………and not forgetting the mood swings and annoying hormones….I think we girls feel ‘ugliest’ during those moments of our lives, every month.

Googled for some tips and realised that this problem is actually very common amongst our female peers. So, fret not, you’re not alone! And what I have gathered is that yes, your weight might fluctuate due to increased in appetite and water retention, which explains the bloatedness, but during your period, your appetite might reduce. For some, it reduces after their period is over.

My appetite goes back to normal during my period as I feel bloated and uncomfortable. My abdomen area is also bulgier than normal, which makes me ‘feel fat’. 😦

Here are some tips which I’d managed to google out!

Eat six mini meals. Eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day helps regulate blood sugar levels and keeps cravings from becoming binges. Try eating six smaller meals instead of the usual three bigger ones. Space them out about every three hours to give your body constant fuel.

Choose complex carbs. Fiber-rich foods are complex carbs that take longer for your body to break down and absorb, further curbing your cravings. Eat more whole-grain breads and cereals, and produce like legumes, fruit, and starchy veggies, which are on the complex-carb list.

Go for protein. By including protein at every meal or snack you help moderate blood sugar imbalances and slow the digestive process to keep from feeling hungry. Choose better-for-you protein options like eggs, chicken, turkey, fish, even peanut butter.

Maintain magnesium intake. Research indicates women can experience low levels of magnesium during PMS. Peanut butter, almonds, cashews, brown rice, sunflower seeds, and most beans are great sources of magnesium. It should be noted that chocolate is also rich in magnesium (which may further explain the cravings), but it’s also high in fat. If you simply must have chocolate, try to make it a small piece of high-quality, antioxidant-rich dark chocolate rather than milk chocolate, which typically has more calories and fat.

Relax and take a deep breath. Cravings can worsen in times of stress. By learning relaxation techniques and practicing them whenever you feel anxious or stressed, you can curtail the snack attacks.

Bring on the sunshine. The lack of sun can reduce serotonin levels, which leads to increased appetite and cravings. Get outdoors or let the sunshine in to raise serotonin levels and reduce sugar and carb cravings.

Get moving. Exercise boosts endorphins and decreases the appetite, but it’s not just scheduled exercise that can help. Being more physically active throughout your daily routine can also make a difference. Walk the dog, vacuum the floor, take the stairs, and simply keep moving.

Take heart. Cravings aren’t the only thing on the premenstrual rise. The female metabolism also increases a week before menstruation. So if you cave in to a craving you’ll be happy to know our bodies may burn an additional 100 calories a day during this time. It’s a small way of counteracting extra eating!

But but but… I found myself still going for the remaining few pieces of Truffle Fries! I’m telling you they are ONE OF DA BEST I’ve ever tried man! You’ve gotta tryyyy them if you’re there!

Just note that they don’t call it Truffle Fries but potato fries! But the staff would know anyway 🙂

And we lazed around for awhile before deciding to head to another cafe for desserts. Yeah, how fattening! 😦

New funky colours for my hair done at Headlines Hairdressing Salon!

I’ve been wanting to get funky colours for my hair for quite some time now but didn’t have the courage to go ahead due to work requirements. I’m working in corporate office (where the offices of big bosses are) as the company’s Legal Counsel. Surely such a position deters one from having funky hair?

I regretted so much that I didn’t get it done while I still could, when I was still a student back then.

But nevertheless, it’s the festive season and #YOLO (you only live once), so I was thinking, heck! Why not? If not now, then when?

Would be ridiculous if I have to have funky hair when I was older!

Beauty Review : Home-based Facial Salon at Lovely Face Spa (Tampines)

To be honest, I don’t go for facials. The only time I’ve went for one was kindly sponsored by Navara Beauty. I don’t even mask at home anymore, heck!

Recently, one of my gf introduced me to Lovely Face Spa at Tampines which she mentioned was highly raved by many girls online.

My concerns for my face are :-

1. Oily T-zone (I have combi skin)

2. Clogged pores, especially on my nose, black and white heads. Very annoying.

3. My incurable and hopeless dark circles

4. Freckles, which I have had since I was a kid?

5. Visible large pores on my nose and cheek areas

Complimented by many, my skin condition is actually very good since I don’t do much maintenance. Even the lady boss, Tiffany, of LFS said so 🙂 So yes, I am indeed very blessed but of course, I don’t have flawless perfect fair and porcelain-like skin.

I opted for the ‘Essential Glow Facial’ as well as the ‘Eye Treatment’. I was told that if I were to do Acid peels, eye treatment would be impossible.

Acid peel would help to target my freckles and uneven skin tone mainly.

I was more concerned with the stupid clogged pores and dark circles, hence the choice.

So you can see, the area is not that big but still ample. It’s the size of a normal HDB room.

Tiffany previously worked at beauty salons so she has had ample experience. Her skills and techniques are quite okay.

Her customer service is good too.

I received a follow-up sms from her few days later after the facial.

The problem with me going to facial is that, I have a hard time judging if it’s effective on my skin. Because mainly, I don’t have much problems with it compared to someone who has acne problems which did/didn’t reduce after going for facial.

The extraction was not as painful as I’d thought it would be and what my friend mentioned. Guess it’s also because I didn’t have much to extract but there were some painful ones at the sides of the nose and near my brows.

Pores seemed clean after extraction but I could still see some clogged ones.

Visible large pores remain…visible and large.

What I like about her facial package is that she helps you to trim your brows, which I suck at. Because I shave rather than pluck, there were many ingrowns which sometimes cause inflammations and acne. Tiffany had painstakingly tried to pluck out all the ingrowns which I’m quite satisfied about 🙂

There were moments which made me felt uncomfortable, for example when the electrolysis-like machine was used. You would feel that your skin is getting electrocuted. I can’t remember what is that machine called and for though, because there were so many stuffs used…

The package also includes head and shoulder massages which I need so badly….And the massage session lasted longer than I’d expected. That goes to show that Tiffany doesn’t cut ‘costs’ which I like very much. 🙂

My dark circles still remained nevertheless and I fully understand that the solution to skin problems is not a miraculously one-off incident. You will need to constantly maintain and review.

But I also know that clogged pores and dark circles will always recur. Clogged pores arise due to dirt, impurities and of course our humid climate in Singapore while dark circles, well, lack of rest, straining of eyes and using of gadgets…

I feel that these problems will never efface 😦

So is this facial worth it for me?

I would say I don’t think I will be going back, since I don’t have much of a problem (which can be solved) for my skin.

I wouldn’t say that Tiffany’s skills and equipment aren’t good but just that, I wouldn’t want to spend so much on facials in general.

She is still very highly raved by many others though 🙂

Beauty Review : Royale Beauty Kojic Papaya Soap

I have heard of  Royale Beauty Kojic Papaya Soap some time back but didn’t really get down on my foot to try it. Achieving fair porcelain skin is one of every girl’s dream and this soap is said to help diminish dark areas, eliminate melasma and freckles, remove pimples and lighten the skin. The soap is also proven to rejuvenate and nourish the skin by holding back the formation of melanin.

Kojic Papaya Soap contains a complete mixture of active and powerful ingredients making it a very effective soap in moisturizing, whitening and lightening the skin. Unlike other soaps, Kojic Papaya is safe and does not contain any side effects that can worsen skin problems. In fact, it can treat the following skin issues:

I have been wanting to achieve a fairer skin tone (who doesn’t?) for quite a while now and because of the lack of sun block application, I became a shade darker whenever I run for events. A major epic moment for a beauty blogger I know, so I bear that in mind whenever I go for runs now.

I got mine from this seller on Qoo10 at $10 including normal postage fees.

Delivery maybe took about a week? Was expecting a shorter delivery time after reading the reviews but nope, that wasn’t the case.

But I guess 1 week is still acceptable.

I’m a little wary about the effects of this soap because I have read reviews stating that it causes a tingling sensation and would cause mild peeling of the skin because one of the main function is for exfoliating purposes.

I don’t have sensitive skin but I did a patch testing on my right backhand first before applying my whole body. No weird feeling so I proceeded to lather it on my whole body.

I skipped my face for the first attempt though, fearing it would cause massive destruction to my face. You know how important face is to girls. 😉

I tried on my face on the second time round and so far, no sensitivity/allergy.

It was very well-packed. Seller also included a brochure but didn’t manage to snap a pic.

Now, for my review after using it twice.

Of course, nothing is ever magical and even if the claimed effects are immediately prominent, it might only be a temporary thing.

I understand that many girls who have tried this soap, mentioned that a month would be a good gauge as our skin takes about 28 days to renew itself?

Anyway, here are the pros and cons:-


  1. No allergy but be careful not to let it come into contact to your vjj. I experienced a little tingling and itchy sensation down there, most probably because this soap is acidic and our vjjs are alkaline? Whatever it is, try avoiding getting the soap to be in contact with sensitive areas such as your eyes as well. Read reviews that they sting your eyes….so be careful!
  2. Skin felt a little smoother perhaps due to its exfoliating effects
  3. No peeling effect – is the product not working well? Other girls mentioned that peeling effects would mean that the soap is working effectively.


  1. Skin feels tight and dry, especially on the face after using the soap. This is normal though, just be sure to apply moisturiser after that. 
  2. Tingling feel at sensitive areas as mentioned above.
  3. I’m not a soap bar person because I hate lathering it on my body. I prefer the contemporary body wash style.
  4. Some girls complained about the smell and that it smells like puked payaya. It does smell like payaya, but I guess the ‘puke’ part is somehow still acceptable for me. Not that pungent.

As mentioned, I will continue to use it to analyse its effects. Hopefully it can help to bring my skin tone a shade or two lighter and also lighten my scars and freckles. Will snap pictures of before and after to provide a more comprehensive and detailed review! 🙂


My 2nd Sculptra treatment session with Celevenus Wellness & Aesthetic Clinic!

Oh yes, another benefit that I derived from the Sculptra treatment is that it helps in reducing the appearance of my nasolabial folds!!!

I cannot stand looking at the mirror with these annoying folds staring hard back at me, wondering how to eradicate them and now I can with the help of Sculptra! On top of that, I’ve tried various anti-ageing products and also to apply them in the usual outwards and upwards lifting motion to defy the gravity but to no avail. I am quite sure these folds are caused by both ageing and loss of facial volume, which gradually became more and more prominent.

5 Healthy snacks you can have while trying to lose weight

As you guys know how health-conscious I have been recently, I have been paying extra attention and caution to my food and drink intakes.

Many of you have approached me with questions on tips to lose weight.

Here are some of the snacks I would recommend that you guys to consider if you are looking for healthier alternatives, i.e. less fat, sodium, sugar, carbs…

1. Fruits

You can never go wrong with fruits. Have them before your meal or 2 hrs after a meal would be ideal so that these simple sugars won’t turn into excess fat.

Can fruits make you fat since they are made of sugar?

Answer is, simple sugars are much easier to digest compared to complex sugars such as pasta.

Moreover, whether they result in an increase in fat % depends on few factors :

a. the amount consume – at the most, I would take 2 types of fruits for snacks. I doubt one can stuff so many fruits at one go or a day to result to the ‘fattening’ state.

b. whether you burn off these sugars which would convert to glucose for energy or stored as fats (excess). I would have a piece of banana before my evening run, say about 1.5h before, to fuel my energy and 1.5h to 2h is a good timing for digestion so you won’t get stitches or stomach cramps. It’s also 1 of runners’ top favourite energy food before their marathons 🙂

2. High fibre foods

Chew on veggie sticks or munch on a piece of bread that contains low-glycemic index.

Glycemic index (GI) is one of several metrics used to quantify short-term changes in blood glucose levels in humans following the ingestion of carbohydrate-containing foods.Glucose is the body’s source of energy; it is the fuel used by the brain, muscles, and other organs. Glucose is set at 100, and all foods are indexed against that number. Therefore, foods that are quickly digested have a high G.I., and foods that are digested more slowly have a lower G.I.

Simply put, choose food with low GI would allow you to feel fuller for a longer time as they are digested more slowly.

Wholemeal/multi-grain bread/Quaker oats (packet) or snacks like SoyJoy is good.

3. Salads

Further to point 2 above, salads make great snacks or meal replacements too! You need not only add veggies, you can play around with the ingredients yourself. I prefer preparing my own salads as I know what my own preferences are. Meat is not fattening if you eat them moderately and choose the right meat and parts to eat.

For salads, throw in strips/chunks of chicken breast or smoked salmon. I assure you they are very yummy! 🙂

I have mine with only lemon juice as dressing or no dressing at all.

4. Cereals/Muesli

Consider having packet of instant cereals that are yummy and yet contain little calories!

Either that, pack a box of cereals or museli (or muesli bar?). You can have them with or without milk.

Cereals/cornflakes can be said to be fattening due to high carbs and some contain sugar as well.

Choose wisely. I like plain cereals or either that those with dried fruits such as Banana Nut Crunch – that’s my all name favourite.

Of course comparing cereals and veggies, the latter is less fattening. But this is just my suggestion if you find salads boring or tasteless. At least cereals are less fattening that chocolate cakes and stuffs.

5. Yoghurt

It’s not one of my favourite food but it’s definitely one of the healthy foods recommended to consume.

Get plain yoghurt and combine with your own choice of fruits. This is healthier and less fattening than those fruit yoghurt. You may also consider adding fruits to your plain cereals/oats 🙂

Drinking water alone will not keep you full for a long time and it’s a hassle to keep having to relieve yourself.

If your stomach is growling for hunger, listen to it. Listen to your body.

Feed it right and exercise.

You will lose weight gradually in no time.

I hope this helps you girls who are trying to lose some weight.

Physical features/areas I would like to improve on

Before you judge, I am not advocating that plastic surgery is right or wrong. There is no right or wrong per se and each to his/her own choice and decision.

If you’d asked me, I am still quite easy going on getting aesthetics treatment done (I had mine done on my face – Read here!) but am still trying to digest the reality of a full-blown plastic surgery.

I strongly believe that everyone has their own choice but the issue is what is meant by ‘having to cross the line’? And who sets this imaginary line?

An obsession with trying to improve one’s physical appearance is more than often due to a lack of confidence, lack of self-esteem, over-conscious of self-appearance and what some of us call it a psychological problem.

The growth of plastic surgery reaching out to the current society is overwhelming (thanks to main contributing factors such as KPOP craze) and it’s actually quite scary how Korea is reacting (overreacting) to the issue of plastic surgery.

One of the recent news that captured the over-obsession with plastic surgery in Korea was documented here where rewards from parents have shifted from sweets, holiday treats, cash to now – plastic surgery.

And before you criticise girls for being vain or plain crazy, guys are also now hit by the plastic surgery craze. Maybe this is more prominent in Korea as compared to our local counterparts, but I won’t be surprise if Singapore is slowly taken over by storm as well.

Whether you are getting fillers done that are non-invasive or if you’re brave enough to take the risks and beautify yourself with a full-blown make over, both would still fall under the overarching umbrella of ‘plastic surgery’.

So okay, debate on plastic surgery issues aside.

What are my physical features that I dislike or would like to improve on?

Psst, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and is extremely subjective, so perhaps girls withe double eyelids are deemed to be prettier but there could be some who think that those with single/monolids are gorgeous.

Whatever it is, this is gonna be based on my own personal preference (duh!) so think twice before you disagree 🙂

1. Single eyelids

Also, pls pardon the weary look. I had only 3 hours of sleep before running 10km….

I have single eyelids due to genetics and would love to get my double eyelids surgery done, perhaps some time next year. I am more inclined towards opting for a non-incisional method – suture method but as we know, you can’t have the best of both worlds, this method has its cons too as compared to the incisional method – cutting.

Suture method

Pros : Claimed to be reversible, lesser downtime, faster recovery time and less swelling. Cheaper than cutting method.

Cons : Have read news that this method is not 100% permanent and that eyelids flip back to single eyelids within 2 to 5 years? Not as lasting as the cutting method.

Cutting method

Pros : More lasting than suture method, in fact, it’s permanent.

Cons : More expensive, longer downtime, much more swelling.

Whichever method it is, double eyelid surgery compared to other physical areas are seen to be extremely common now. There is lesser ‘shame’ in admitting that one has undergone the knife to achieve double eyelids.

Double eyelid stickers, fibre stickers or glue. You name it, I’ve tried it. Although not consistent I must admit and I don’t have the patience to wait for results to be achieved.

I’ve a few friends and have heard many girls who achieved double eyelids by religiously sticking the double eyelids tapes.

One thing about these tapes is that they are extremely obvious, no matter how you try to ‘conceal’ them. Worse thing is, they hardly stick well and it gets embarrassing when people notices.

Fibre sticks and glues are another worse lot to consider. They create a very fake crease on your eyelids and your eyelids get ‘stuck’ together which is very obvious too. Glue creates a white sticky residue as well.

So all these methods are no-no.

My single eyelids make me look more sleepy, less alert and somehow less feminine.

Again, these are based on my own preference and mentality.

2. Nose

As with many other fellow Asians, a slim nose with high-bridged is very rare.

I have a stubby nose and the bridge is not high enough. But I’m thankful it’s alot better than those with extremely flat noses with almost non-existent bridges =x

3. Sunken cheeks

This is the area where I have done something to improve by undergoing a Sculptra treatment with Celevenus Wellness and Aesthetic Clinic where I was put into safe hands of Dr Dylan Chau 🙂

I have gone for my 2nd treatment this afternoon and am looking forward to a ‘fuller’ face with a reduction in my laugh lines. Can’t wait! 🙂

4. Birthmarks

Little known to many, I have 3 birthmarks on my body. 1 which is very light on my right outer thigh, 1 on my left elbow and 1 huge one on my left inner thigh.

The last one obviously, bothers me the most.

I am extremely self-conscious whenever I wear a short dress, mini skirt or shorts.

Birthmarks, whether they are a symbol of good luck or not, are still unsightly. I mean who would yearn for one?!

Am also trying to target this problem but I know that laser is gonna be painful and would require many sessions to remove, though not completely. And might even left scars.

I’d recently bought a highly-raved cream, claimed to be effective for pigmentation problems, including birthmarks known as Meladerm®. It’s expensive, especially with the shipping but I’m just hoping it can help lighten my birthmark significantly. Keeping my fingers crossed.

5. Skin tone

Apart from having uneven skin tone on my face, a fairer complexion on my overall body and face would be ideal.

Have been taking hakubi whitening drink and pills and Fancl drink and pills as well, but seems like it’s true that there’s a limit to how fair one can be.

Have contemplated whitening jabs as well and understand the risks associated, especially with clinics that are not credible.

Still under pending though 🙂

And not forgetting my horrendous dark circles…sigh.

Have your food fried in a healthier method – Air-fried using Philips Air Fryer

If you guys have been following my on my social media platforms, you would have known that I have been lamenting how I had missed out the Groupon deal on a Philips Air Fryer! I’d actually saw a deal on Mistral air fryer going for $100+ but decided that Philips would be a better choice… What’s more, what comes to mind when people Mistral as a brand?

FAN! That’s right. So no.

Philips Air Fryer.

I was quite upset about it but at the same time, I experienced mixed emotions because I have been receiving reviews from both sides of the fence! Other than stalking people’s lives, Facebook is actually a very good platform to air out your concerns and pose questions. That is if you have helpful friends (be it virtual or not) to provide constructive feedback. Note the word, CONSTRUCTIVE.

What I was told :

Pros –

1. Healthier, less or no oil required

2. ‘Fries’ food much faster than deep frying

3. No oil-splattering all over

Cons –

1. Food isn’t as crispy and tasty compared to deep fried food

2. Food is dried out of its succulence

3. A little difficult to clean the machine – but have read reviews that placing a layer of aluminium foil solves this problem!

4. Not true that no oil is required, food would taste better with some oil. Read here where the advertisement of the Philips Air Fryer was banned as it claims food can be fried with air but a small contradictory print stated that oil was still required.

There are several models of the Air fryer, so do pay attention to the model and specs if you are gonna purchase it.

The older version HD9220/20 – Black and White.

Philips have came up with a newer versions in 2 different sizes:

And what’s the difference between the older and newer versions?


Okay, maybe with some minor discrepancies on some of their specs (which doesn’t seem to be that significant anyway)

The smaller and larger sizes are 800g and 1.2kg respectively. XL caters to larger quantity of food.

So guess which one did I get?


I got the older version at $239 and was given free baking tins and I forgot what… at SITEX last weekend. The white version was selling at a cheaper price of $229. I was told that Harvey Norman was having the same promo as well and the booth at SITEX was under Harvey Norman too.

As the only difference between the newer and older version was just the digital imaging, and the price difference does not justify the discrepancy, I decided to get the older version. I mean it makes sense right? Why pay over a hundred bucks just for that ? I can make do with non-digital knob as well.

Anyway, I had actually headed down on 2 days – Fri and Sun. I was over the moon when I discovered that SITEX actually does sell kitchen appliances such as the Philips Air Fryer. I don’t know if I’m turning into an auntie or what but recently, after taking an interest in preparing my own food, I started to pay more attention to what others are eating (healthy/unhealthy) and kitchen appliances like the air fryer and happycall pan which make lives easier. Especially so for amateur with very basic culinary skills like myself.

I started out by making my own salads. I have received many compliments on how tasty my salads look in pictures and some have even requested me to prepare for them.

Honestly speaking, I am quite shocked because I’d always thought salads are like idiot-proof food. You just gotta get the ingredients and dump everything together. No offence, I ain’t calling them idiots but it’s actually very very simple. And salads are meant to be healthy so boiling would be the first cooking method to come into mind. You may add broccoli, carrots, sweet corns, mushrooms for enhancement of appearance and taste, just boil them and tadah, you’re done.

So how did the Philips Air Fryer fare thus far?

It’s been merely a few days since I’ve gotten it, and I have no really been to grocery shopping recently…

So my first food attempt to be air-fried was egg toast.

It turned out not bad actually, except that the bottom side of the bread got stuck onto the metal grill -.-

And then I air-fried my bratwurst sausages with cheese inside. I usually just toast them up but decided to try it out using the air-fryer.

It looks kinda shrivelled…maybe because I overcooked them or maybe the critic is true, that they do ‘dry’ out your food 😦


If you know me well enough, I’m not a fan of fried food. But if I were to have my food fried, I would definitely choose them to be air-fried, whether they require little oil rather than to be deep fried.

And also because, I am extremely afraid of heat and oil-splattering so innovative kitchen appliances such as the happycall pan and the air fryer is perfect for me, notwithstanding that I did burn myself accidentally while I was using the air fryer -.-


Oh yes, by the way, I know I haven’t been blogging conscientiously recently…because I’m running outta ideas what to blog about!

I’ve been so lazy on my beauty regime but recently, I bought Vaseline’s Instant Fair body lotion…and will be attending a facial session later tonight (not sponsored), so I guess those interested can keep a lookout for my reviews… 🙂
