[Lifestyle] In South Korea People Check into Prison to Reduce Stress

Browsing through MyFatPocket’s articles and an interesting one caught my eye – ”In South Korea People Check into Prison to Reduce Stress“.

Catchy headlines like these surely does ignite the curiosity of someone!

With the growing immense stress in the contemporary world, how do people actually relieve themselves out of it or at least seek to reduce it?

In South Korea, people actually turn to such forms of reducing stress by seeking relaxation, basically through shutting themselves (almost) out from the busy-buzzing world.

Paying guests are expected to turn in their cell phones, books and other belongings and put on a regulation uniform before checking in.  This is where they will spend most of their time, meditating and silently reflecting on life. There are also private meditation classes, spiritual classes, and ‘healing’ plays conducted as group sessions in the auditorium. A two-night stay at Prison Inside Me costs 150,000 won ($146).

Who would have thought that this was founded by a lawyer named Kwon Yong-seok? How apt and it kind speaks volume isn’t it?

In this article, it was mentioned that people found it difficult to live without their phones, especially a smart one where allows full-blown interaction with other using social media platforms.

If you observe, which need not require a close-up observation and by just putting your own phones down for a moment and take a look around when you’re in the public….how many of us are actually engrossed in our own little world, albeit a virtual one? Most of us would be either texting, surfing Facebook, Instagram, Twittering…surfing the Internet…so on and so forth.

Technology is here to conquer.

Now back to the topic of imprisoning yourself to relieve stress.

Do you find this useful? What do you think of this idea?

Some of us choose to relax by taking a break from work by travelling on a vacation alone or with our loved ones. Some workaholics still continue to carry around their stress while travelling, which sometimes are required of them by demanding bosses/superiors and still continue to work while on a vacation.

Kwon Yong-seok did mention that he and his wife originally envisioned a longer stay for their guests, but people weren’t able to take so much time off. So they had to cut it down to just two days. They also had to make a huge concession – permitting guests to check their smartphones at least once a day.

This is a problem, or the problem.

People actually do know that they are reaching their limit-max and so deserve a break (before they go berserk) but yet they can’t completely give themselves in to relaxation. It may be by choice or out of choice, but whatever it is, this significantly reduces the effectiveness of such assistance.

Also, imprisoning yourself in such places where you lack to discipline to cast your phone away or stressful thoughts may also be well-suited for those who do not or cannot travel for vacations to beautiful places.

But at the end of the day, if you can’t banish all the negativity (stress, fear, anxiety etc) in life (which will never be absolute/complete anyway), there really is a ‘prison inside (of) you’ because your heart and mind are imprisoned by them.

[Beauty Review] Biore UV Bright Face Milk [PINK] Sunblock SPF50PA++

I must admit that I was one of those lazy ones who couldn’t care less about applying sunblock and its importance. I have had freckles on my face for the longest time ever known, like since young? It could be because I used to be quite sporty back in my teens (yeah I know, it was that long!) and I was frequently under the sun. I used to be quite tanned to be honest.

By now, I hope you girls know the importance of applying sunblock before heading outdoors, if not you should really google all about it!

Anyhoo, I guess the freckles stuck by me for the longest time (sounds so wrong?) and till date, I still have them. Speaking of which, I hope I’ll be able to laser them off soon or something but honestly speaking, lasering my face is so much scarier than lasering off my birthmarks on my body?

It was only until recently I decided to be more diligent and apply sunblock lotion before applying my foundation. I’m using Chanel compact foundation powder by the way that includes an SPF of 20. I was using Sunplay SKIN Aqua UV Moisture Milk SPF50 PA+++ and DrX’s Non-tinted Sunscreen SPF 30+ (5A) 60ml.

Recently, I ordered this Biore sunblock from Qoo10 and I’ve been loving it ever since! Never regretted.

With the constant lack of sleep, my skin loses its radiance easily and the lack of luster inevitably results in dull skin. That was the reason why I choose ‘bright skin’ instead of the rest.

Now, on to my face.

These pictures are totally unedited, except to sharpen its resolution (because my iphone camera sucks).

Sigh, just take a look at all my ugly freckles and huge pores… 😥

Now, for the pros and cons.

Pros :

  • It does brighten up your skin instantly after application
  • It has quick-absorbent properties
  • Non-sticky

Cons :

  • Dries up pretty fast so you will have to apply quickly all over your face
  • The price difference between retail and the Qoo10 shop which I got this sunblock from is like what, a few bucks? I only realised it when I happen to chance upon it at SaSa which is selling at $15+. Not sure about other retail shops though.
  • Too small a bottle, wish it came in bigger size like its blue version (Sunplay SKIN Aqua UV Moisture Milk SPF50 PA+++)

Overall rating :

FAQ on birthmark removal and updates

*For pictures, please email me or leave a comment, or simply ‘like’ and follow me on my Facebook page! 🙂

As promised on my Facebook page (follow me if you haven’t already!), here is the latest update on my birthmarks removal.

You may read about the progress from the treatments I have undergone thus far here.

I have been trying out the Medlite C6 laser from HOYA ConBio®, the latest in Q-switched laser technologyto treat and remove my birthmarks. So far, my 2 smaller birthmarks have been responding to the Medlite C6 laser treatments well enough to have them almost completely removed. There is a risk of having a white indent mark after the treatments but I guess that would be better than having a dark one? However, not to worry because the white indent will slowly fade away with time as seen from the pictures.

Unfortunately, the huge birthmark on my inner thigh has not been responding well to the laser treatments but instead, sort of backfired. You will need to consider this risk if you are looking to remove yours. Stubborn pigmentation that are too dark and deep may not be able to disperse and lighten, and may darken even further. This was what happened to mine.

After the 4th treatment using Medlite C6, my doctors decided to use another alternative to help treat my birthmarks, especially the huge one, which is the Fractional Laser Treatment. I was told that this is stronger than Medlite C6 but surprisingly, it did not hurt as much as Medlite and downtime in terms of swelling and redness but lesser and faster too!

This is the first attempt using the Fractional Laser Treatment.

My doctor mentioned to me that some of the patients who have had their cafe au lait birthmarks treated using Medlite have also encountered the same issue as my huge birthmark. Similarly, they have also been advised to use the Fractional Laser Treatment and some of them had theirs successfully removed.

I am crossing my fingers doubly hard this time round because should this treatment also fail me, then the final and last resort would be to ‘cut’ away the layer….which I really shudder even at the mere thought of it, although I’m not too sure how this would be done since my birthmark is flat and not ‘popping’ out with an ‘extra flesh’.

I know some of you guys might think that it isn’t such a big deal having these birthmarks but all I can say is that I have been living with these for the past 26 years of my life and every single time I wear short skirt, short dress and shorts (not even mini level), I get extremely self-conscious. Without fail.

And to make it worse, this is validated and verified by onlookers’ watchful eyes. Although some of you guys might also say that thankfully the birthmark is not on my face which is a gazillion times worse, but still….

I got this even when I was a child especially when I went swimming as the huge birthmark on my inner thigh would definitely be seen while wearing a swimsuit or during physical exercise lessons in school.

In whatever circumstances, this huge birthmark has somehow or rather but certainly affected my self-esteem. Even having long slim and toned flawless legs (no other blemishes) wouldn’t make me contented if the huge birthmark remains.

I must say that patience is really required should you want to remove your birthmarks, because a few treatment sessions are usually required. One should be realistic with their expectations of the results and time process.

Here are the usual FAQs I have been receiving and should I have missed out any of your queries, I apologise. I hope these FAQs would more or less address your concerns with regards to birthmark removal.

Q1: How many treatment sessions do I need?

A1 : This is one of the most common queries I have received. My answer to this is that it would really depend on the individual’s condition. The number of sessions would depend on how ‘deep’ your pigmentation is, into the layers of your skin. One very obvious method in deciding whether your birthmark pigmentation is deep or not, would be to analyse the shade of the birthmark.

The 2 smaller birthmarks are definitely much lighter than the huge 1 on my inner thigh. And to achieve good results, I have undergone 4 treatment sessions for that to reach this stage.

Another consideration would be the size of the birthmark. Logically, smaller birthmarks would require less number of treatments compared to bigger ones.

Q2 : How much does the treatment cost?

A2 : This is pretty much dependent on the number of treatments required for your condition. From what I know when I inquired with the doc on behalf of my friend, a 50cent coin size scar (not birthmark) costs around $350-$400.  But then again, for a more accurate and confirmed quotation, it is best that you check with the doc.

Q3 : How long would a session take?

A3 : Again, depending on the above contributing factors, it may take approx 15mins to 30mins. You will also require numbing cream to be applied before the treatment, and it would require about 10 to 15mins for the numbing effect to take place.

Q4 : Does it hurt?

A4 : I would be lying if I say it doesn’t hurt. Before the process, as mentioned above, numbing cream would be applied to minimize pain. During the treatment, when the laser beams penetrate into your skin, it does hurt but it is more of an ant-bite pain. Personally, the aftermath of the treatment is much more painful as there would be redness and swelling involved. Based on my experience thus far, the pain would usually remain until about 2 hours later, after which it would gradually subside. I tolerate all this pain because it’s really ‘NO PAIN NO GAIN’.

Q5 : Any downtime? What is the recovery period?

A5 : As mentioned above, there would be redness and swelling for approx 2 hours after the treatment. The redness may continue till the next day and will then subside gradually. After about 4 to 5 days, the treated areas would then experience dryness and scabs would form, then shrivel and dry up. This is the period in which you may most probably itch like crazy. It’s best not to scratch or touch the area at all, which can be quite frustrating because it’s just sooooo itchy. But this is the same with any other wounds that are healing.

Q6 : Any medication?

A6 : I was given bleaching/whitening cream and ‘calming cream’ before but logically, I skip applications when the area is still sore and the new layer of skin is still ‘fresh’. Definitely would hurt a gazillion times if you apply something on it then.

I was told not to apply anything onto the birthmarks after my Fractional Laser treatment.

Q7 : Will it be permanently removed?

A7 : This is really anyone’s guess. Even the doctors would not be able to provide a definite answer because it really depends on the individual and one’s luck. Some birthmarks do recur while some don’t.

Q8 : Any scars?

A8 :  I am very lucky not to have had any scars from the treatment. There may be some white indents which some of you might call ‘scars’, they are actually areas that are whiter than the surrounding skin. But I guess that looks better than having a brown patch which is more obvious? I was actually afraid that the white indents would remain forever but it seems like they do fade away gradually with time, although not 100% complete.

With the new laser treatment, I am starting to harbour hopes that my birthmarks can be completely removed again.

*fingers crossed doubly tight*

My first trail run – Lion Dash 2014 @ Tampines Bike Park

I thought since I’ve been into fitness and diet myself, why not share with other girls who are keen?

Let’s start with sharing my experience in a very recent run event – Lion Dash 2014. As this was our first trail run, we opted for ‘Fun Run’ instead of the other 2 categories. It was also because I didn’t want to get all muddy and dirty which we eventually did covered ourselves with even for the ‘Fun Run’.

Don’t let its name mislead you, it was definitely not fun at all. Or perhaps, challenging would be a more appropriate word.

We have been participating in other run events (I don’t use the word ‘marathon’ because that would technically mean 42.195km) since 2013.

These are the medals I have achieved thus far, excluding a Nike Run which didn’t give out any medal but just a finisher tee -_-” (Nike u so rich , y u no give medal?!)

Photo 12-6-14 9 15 02 pm

The bf started joining such events with his friends first and later, I got roped in and from then on, my interest grew. Of course, I had another agenda which is to lose weight!!! Consequently, I run on my own on certain evenings after work as well.

At the start of the race.

Photo 8-6-14 9 55 38 am

The Lion Dash as mentioned was the most challenging run ever I have experienced. Apart from the puddles of mud which some could be intentionally avoided, there were deep pools of muddy water as  well. It was knee-level and because the water was muddy, we could not see how deep or shallow it was. Hence, we took some time to cross over the long stretch of the pool of muddy water and because the ground was so soft due to mud, we nearly fell.

I read from other runners’ experience that some of them suffered some cuts and abrasions as well.

In addition, as with all trail runs, the incline is definitely not a flat-level one. Running up-slope was very exhausting and I was very much not prepared for that since most of my runs were on flat-grounds. Running down-slope was also a tricky one because some were so steep that I was so afraid of falling or roll downhill…LOL!

We did not bring our phones along and kept it at the baggage corner for safekeeping since we were afraid that our phones might get dirty or drop into the mud, so there are no pictures from my camera.

These are some pictures which I got off from their official Facebook account.

I guess the deep pool of muddy water wasn’t captured because the photographers were afraid too.

You may view the rest of the pictures here via Running Shots’ Facebook.

These were the only 3 pictures of us.

I know right, that serious look that I’m wearing on my face….I dont know why the bf is looking so chirpy…?!

I don’t know how long I took but I think it was approx 1h30min for 8km? Usually I’ll take about 1h20min for 10km so you can imagine the reasons for the delay.

And even though our race category did not include obstacles, apart from the above-mentioned ones, we needed to climb over huge logs and branches. There was one that was so high that I had difficulty climbing over because my legs are just too short -_-”

The huge ass log was placed in the muddy water and I couldn’t balance myself and decided to just tramp on the muddy waters instead.

On top of that, we also had to climb over a mountain of huge tyres…

Yeah, see that mountain of tyres behind?

We didn’t had to roll or carry the tyres because it wasn’t in our race category.

You know, I actually feel kinda cheated because we still had to encounter some obstacles, argh!

Anyhoo, we still managed to find some energy to snap pics after the run.

I’m keen to join Shape Run and Great Eastern Women’s race (thinking of whether to try out 1/2 marathon – 21km) since I’ve not tried before…Looking for kakis to join me! 😀

If you are gonna join too, maybe you will see me there too? 😛

New Hair Sponsor : Modern Style Salon x Grand Opening x Beauty Review

As the title suggests, I have a new hair sponsor! 🙂 And what’s awesome is that the salon is located in Tampines and hence, very convenient for east-siders like me!

Awhile back, I did Shiseido’s Hair Treatment and Soft Rebonding with Modern Style Salon as my mane was getting out of hand, with frizzy bits and flyaway. It made me look very unkempt. Even after washing, which is supposed to ‘tame’ my mane after a night’s sleep, I have had people asking what happened to my hair! 😥

So you cannot imagine what my hair look like first thing in the morning when I wake up, it’s really quite horrendous!

I guess this is the result of dyeing your hair too often and even bleaching it. Yes, you would recall that I bleached a portion of my hair to dye it hot funky pink…

And of course, it has lost its colour since a long time ago…

But what is more concerning is the quality of my hair aftermath…

You can tell the difference by just looking at this before-after pic.

The one on the left was before bleaching my hair, it was dry and messy yes but there weren’t as many flyaway and crisps compared to the aftermath on the right 😦

Needless to say, the drying got worse and I had even more split ends than before.

My first visit to Modern Style Salon was to have my hair treated because I reckon they were under too much stress and I haven’t been pampering them for such a long time!

So, I decided to do my hair and myself a favour! 🙂

Before that, let me take you a little tour around Modern Style Salon.

End result?

Smooth and silky hair in no time!!!

Hair treatments are for maintenance purposes which means, similar to facial sessions and self-masking at home, you would need to undergo treatments regularly to achieve your desired result. I dreaded that because that would mean that I would have to squeeze in a slot among my busy schedule and hence, I decided to opt for soft rebonding to solve my problems once and for all.

Headed to Modern Style Salon again to rebond my hair.

And…the aftermath!

Yes, that’s my Mac for lunch which my hair stylist, Tonny has very kindly allowed me to bring in to munch while he fix my hair.

Some tips from me if you are intending to have your hair treated/curl/rebond/any other services that might most proba bly take some time to complete – empty your bladder, ensure your phone/ipad is fully charged (or you can charge it at the salon if allowed) and fill your tummy/take-away and munch while the treatment is done (if your hair stylist doesn’t mind).

You can tell how my locks are now more ‘tamed’ and silkier than before right? 😀
