Beauty Review : Meladerm®

I have been bothered by my birthmarks for the longest time ever, other than my single eyelids. I never understood the beauty of having a double eyelids until recently, but the birthmarks… they have caused me loads of embarrassment ever since I was young.

I have about 3 birthmarks on my body, apart from my moles (well, they said ‘moley’ girls are pretty girls, isn’t it? HAHA!).

Actually the main concern is the HUGEASS birthmark located on my left inner thigh.

And because of that, I have tried to avoid wearing shorts, but even during Physical Education (PE) lessons during my schooling days, it was tough to hide it.

Till now, I am extremely self-conscious of this gigantic birthmark although some have commented, “don’t fix what is not broken/it’s not life-threatening what/it’s not ugly what/thank god it’s not on your face” etc.

EXCUSE ME.

It’s my body and it’s on me.

You don’t have such a huge visible blemish on you and you don’t experience all the embarrassment I had to all these coming 26 years.

If god permits, how about I donate these birthmarks to you? Pfft.

Anyway, if you had read my New Year Resolutions, you would have known that I’ve miraculously managed to secure a sponsorship stint for the laser treatments!

I headed to get my birth marks laser-ed last Friday and I cannot wait to share the results with you guys! This laser treatment, which is the latest technology available, also helps reduce/lighten freckles/pigmentation problems/tattoos! I shall contain my excitement for now and will be blogging about the treatment soon so stay tuned! 😉

Today’s post is gonna be on some cream that claims to cure hyperpigmentation and yes, it has claimed to have lightened birthmarks (!!!).

Before I managed to secure the sponsorship deal, I was fretting over my birthmarks and how to lighten/remove them using a lesser invasive method that offers no pain at all.

I did my research and chanced upon this website called Civant Skincare which is the official website that sells Meladerm® and because there seems to be some fraudulent websites going round claiming to sell authentic Meladerm®, I’d decided to take the plunge to purchase it from Civant.

Meladerm®

Also, because the product is from the US, I decided not to take the risk and opted for a secured shipping method which simply translates to more money spent! I opted for USPS Priority International that takes about 1 – 2 weeks to arrive with online tracking. Had to pay an additional amount of $24.99, on top of the $49.99. And mind you, these are all in USD!!! So I had actually paid approx SGD$100+??

Sigh, so much hopes. And like they say, the higher your expectations are, the higher your level of disappointment will be.

And I think it’s true.

Although I must first disclaim that in all fairness to this product, I have not been using it consistently. By that I mean that I have not been applying it twice daily due to forgetfulness (sign of ageing!) or over the weekends where I stay over my bf’s place, I didn’t have it with me (forgot to bring it along – another ageing sign…)

But I have been applying it on several occasions now and I think it’s ready for a review.
Here’s the product.

photo 1 (19) photo 2 (19) photo 4 (16) photo 5 (13)

A small portable bottle with a nozzle.

The texture is not oily or too rich/heavy and I like it that way.The absorbency rate is also quite high, which simply means that you need not wait for a long time before it gets absorbed. This is especially important if you have to apply it on your face before your make-up, so that it does not cake.

There is no weird scent as well but a slight fragrance, nothing too overwhelming.

As for the effects, I am quite disappointed to say that till date, I have not seen any improvements. I had thought I saw some lightened parts but I may be thinking too much. On the whole, my birth marks did not lighten at all, not even for the one which is the lightest/faintest in colour.

But then again, it may not have worked because :

  1. I did not religiously apply it twice a day, daily.
  2. Effects can only be see after long-term usage and by that I mean a few months’ usage as claimed via testimonials on Civant’s website.

But since I have started my laser treatments for my birth marks, I do hope they are removed or significantly reduced which I pin high hopes in because of the raves of this latest laser technology as well as the popularity of the aesthetic clinic I visited. So in the mean time, I guess I can still apply Meladerm on them.

Beauty Review : Vaseline Instant Fair Whitening Lotion

As mentioned on my Facebook page a few weeks back, I recently purchased another whitening lotion – Vaseline Instant Fair Whitening Lotion and today, I’ll be offering my honest reviews on it!

I was currently using Nivea Extra Whitening Cell Repair Protect Body Milk as well as the Night Whitening Body Milk only before deciding to try Vaseline.

This review would solely be based on the Vaseline Instant Fair Whitening Lotion and in my next related post, I’ll review both Vaseline and Nivea, striking a comparison between both!

So looks like this :

Anyway, mine looks slightly different – ‘instant’ instead of ‘insta’ – and I have no idea why?

photo 4 (15) photo 5 (12)

Got mine from Watsons though.

The colour is pink – which I personally think is abit gross? LOL

photo 1 (18)

Blending :

photo 2 (18)

After blending :

photo 3 (16)

Here are the pros and cons :

Pros

  1. I’m not too sure if it does help to lighten generally and gradually but I do see a tinge of lighter shade after applying – well, it’s ‘instant fair’ isn’t it? But not as exaggerating as the pic above shows.
  2. Not oily and doesn’t leave any residue thereafter
  3. Fragrant smell – not overwhelming
  4. Absorbs rather fast and well

Cons

  1. Gross pink colour? LOL
  2. I realised that after awhile, like when I apply in the morning, my skin tends to get dry in the afternoon or by evening time which is obvious because I can see dry skin attempting to flake. I think it must be caused by this lotion because I don’t have dry, itchy or sensitive skin to begin with and secondly, I have never encountered this problem with Nivea lotions before.

Beauty Review : Royale Beauty Kojic Papaya Soap

I have heard of  Royale Beauty Kojic Papaya Soap some time back but didn’t really get down on my foot to try it. Achieving fair porcelain skin is one of every girl’s dream and this soap is said to help diminish dark areas, eliminate melasma and freckles, remove pimples and lighten the skin. The soap is also proven to rejuvenate and nourish the skin by holding back the formation of melanin.

Kojic Papaya Soap contains a complete mixture of active and powerful ingredients making it a very effective soap in moisturizing, whitening and lightening the skin. Unlike other soaps, Kojic Papaya is safe and does not contain any side effects that can worsen skin problems. In fact, it can treat the following skin issues:

  • Sun spots
  • Acne or pimples
  • Body acne
  • Freckles
  • Skin blisters
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Rashes
  • Hyper pigmentation
  • Scars
  • Keratosis Pilaris

I have been wanting to achieve a fairer skin tone (who doesn’t?) for quite a while now and because of the lack of sun block application, I became a shade darker whenever I run for events. A major epic moment for a beauty blogger I know, so I bear that in mind whenever I go for runs now.

photo 1 (4) photo 2 (4)

I got mine from this seller on Qoo10 at $10 including normal postage fees.

Delivery maybe took about a week? Was expecting a shorter delivery time after reading the reviews but nope, that wasn’t the case.

But I guess 1 week is still acceptable.

I’m a little wary about the effects of this soap because I have read reviews stating that it causes a tingling sensation and would cause mild peeling of the skin because one of the main function is for exfoliating purposes.

I don’t have sensitive skin but I did a patch testing on my right backhand first before applying my whole body. No weird feeling so I proceeded to lather it on my whole body.

I skipped my face for the first attempt though, fearing it would cause massive destruction to my face. You know how important face is to girls. 😉

I tried on my face on the second time round and so far, no sensitivity/allergy.

It was very well-packed. Seller also included a brochure but didn’t manage to snap a pic.

photo 3 (5)

photo 4 (4)

photo 5 (2)

To show case how thick the bar of soap is.

Now, for my review after using it twice.

Of course, nothing is ever magical and even if the claimed effects are immediately prominent, it might only be a temporary thing.

I understand that many girls who have tried this soap, mentioned that a month would be a good gauge as our skin takes about 28 days to renew itself?

Anyway, here are the pros and cons:-

Pros

  1. No allergy but be careful not to let it come into contact to your vjj. I experienced a little tingling and itchy sensation down there, most probably because this soap is acidic and our vjjs are alkaline? Whatever it is, try avoiding getting the soap to be in contact with sensitive areas such as your eyes as well. Read reviews that they sting your eyes….so be careful!
  2. Skin felt a little smoother perhaps due to its exfoliating effects
  3. No peeling effect – is the product not working well? Other girls mentioned that peeling effects would mean that the soap is working effectively.

Cons

  1. Skin feels tight and dry, especially on the face after using the soap. This is normal though, just be sure to apply moisturiser after that.
  2. Tingling feel at sensitive areas as mentioned above.
  3. I’m not a soap bar person because I hate lathering it on my body. I prefer the contemporary body wash style.
  4. Some girls complained about the smell and that it smells like puked payaya. It does smell like payaya, but I guess the ‘puke’ part is somehow still acceptable for me. Not that pungent.

As mentioned, I will continue to use it to analyse its effects. Hopefully it can help to bring my skin tone a shade or two lighter and also lighten my scars and freckles. Will snap pictures of before and after to provide a more comprehensive and detailed review! 🙂

Long weekend updates! (Food, Beauty & Fashion!) :)

Caught up with some friends of ours and had Ramen Ten at Far East Plaza.

Photo 30-03-2013 07 40 01 PM

I had the chicken ramen illustrated as the 1st pic. Was looking for seafood ramen that is not spicy but they only had tomyum  soup-based one and I didn’t bother asking them if I could change the soup-base to a non-spicy one, so don’t quote me. You can still try asking them. 🙂

But despite not taking any spicy food, I had a major pain in the ass (pun intended + literally) diarrhea that very same night. Thankfully it was after our movie – GI Joe! I wouldn’t be looking forward to running to and fro to the toilet and wasting my $$ away.

The soup was not bad and it’s the first thing I would test and try out first in almost every soupy dish! I am a HUGE fan of soupy stuffs 🙂

I had a sip of bf’s tom yum seafood ramen. It tasted okay but I doubt I would be able to handle it if I were to take a few more sips.

By the way, if you’re all in for action-packed thrillers, then GI Joe is MUST-WATCH for you! 🙂

Received loads of beauty stuffs from My Fat Pocket for my contribution as their Beauty Writer. Check out my beauty articles at their Beauty column 🙂

One of the beauty product received made me jump for joy! There were many stuffs that I’ve been wanting to try out but brushed aside because of the hefty price.

One of which is Skinbiotics – Skin lightening and Regeneration!

Photo 29-03-2013 01 59 57 PM

I’ve read many awesome and positive reviews about these pills and I can’t wait to see the results myself! Till date, it’s my 4th day on the pills now 🙂

By the way, the pills are quite big so those who have problems swallowing huge-ass pills, you may wish to take note before purchasing. It’s sold for $138-$148 at convenience stores. There are 3 different types of Skinbiotics pills.

And just for the benefit for my readers, here’s the summary info on the other 2 types.

I might just get another bottle to meet the 8-week requirement because 1 bottle contains only 50 soft gels and 2 gels a day means that a bottle would last for approx 25 days? Not even a month and it’s so expensive to get them! 😦

I will review on the results again in maybe 2 weeks into it but will definitely do so when I’ve completed 1 bottle of it. So stay tuned! 🙂

Attended a media event for Tian Po’s new launch of their Hearts On Fire ILLA collection:)

It’s also my FIRST media event invitation ever since I’ve started blogging. I’ve had few other media invitations but they either clash with my other appointments or they are held during office hours. 😦

Will be blogging about the Tian Po’s media event soon. Saw some other MFP bloggers there as well 🙂

Received some thank-you gifts from Tian Po as well.

One of which is :

Waffles – additional $3.

We chose Durian and Cocoa flavour. It was really rich in flavour but we felt that the price paid was a little pricey on its end – $11.60, especially at a heartland area.

But nevertheless, great place to chill with your loved ones on a slow relaxing weekend 🙂

Beauty Review – Lovemore My Melody Oil Free 3D mask

Sponsored Advertorial

Few days ago, I received a cute parcel from secretive.sg which definitely got me weak in my knees!

How cute is that?!

Lovemore and Sexylook masks to pamper my skin with!!! 😀

Tried the Lovemore My Melody Oil Free 3D mask in pink for whitening last night!

My Melody Oil Free Whitening 3D Fitting Mask is enriched with Vitamin C and Buddleja, provides protection against environmental stressors.

Jiro Wang – New endorser for Lovemore!

Soaked in essence of goodness! 😀

This mask is in 3D form which supposedly gives you a better fit for your face shape. But knowing that I have a sharp and small face, it was too big for my face. I extended the below to my neck as well. And I know this picture is somewhat disturbing.

Raves :

  1. Instant brightening of the skin
  2. Awesome whitening effects
  3. Helps to adequately moisturise the skin
  4. Not oily, woke up to a less oily skin the next morning
  5. Mask sheet is thick, not flimsy – made of high quality!
  6. Smells great! Sweet-smelling strawberry-like fragrance!
Rants :
  1. 3D form didn’t suit me well
  2. And I tore it accidentally along the dotted lines

Beauty Reviews – Milky Dress The White Brightening Pack

The advertisement for this beauty product caught my eye recently on Gmarket and I’m quite sure it was pretty attractive to most ladies as well.

It’s main function is for whitening purposes as shown in the pictures below.

Items were bubble wrapped and a small whitening soap bar was given for free as well.

Instructions were also provided

As shown, the whitening effects look great but in reality, it’s really not that fantastic at all. I’m not sure why the picture captured such stark contrast too anyway. The whitening effects seen viaour naked eyes shows only a slight contrast. But overall, am quite satisfied with this buy 🙂

But I believe with consistent application, it would whiten the skin overall. Now, I’ve to decide when to use the Nivea whitening body lotions for day and night as well as this Milky Dress.

Those interested, you may get it from here 🙂

Beauty Reviews – Chanel Compact Powder

Before Chanel, I was using Maybelline Clear Smooth Compact Powder as shown below. I’d tried to get the blue one over the green one where possible, because some places only sell the green one. The blue one has a higher SPF than the green one by 2 levels 🙂 So yeah, trying to be kiasu here 🙂

After that, I have been using that for months until I switched to Chanel and I am glad the product is value for money! 🙂
Note the huge price difference between the 2 brands though =P

I’m not the type who demands for counter-brand cosmetics/skin care products, as long as they are value for money and effective, I will go for them. For example, my blusher is from Silkygirl 🙂 But of course, marketing does play a part as well, as in the prestige as well as price factors, which might not always justify its quality. This is a common misconception 🙂

Like you, I make sure that the product is really highly raved by ladies and get as much info as possible through researching. Just like what you are doing now – reading reviews. But I do understand what may work for others may/may not work for me. So I’d always take opinions with a pinch of salt, which you should too, especially since each individual has different type of skincare problems as well as the type of skin. FYI, I have the combination type of skin (oily T-zone) – which is rather common in our climate conditions.

Here are the pictures of the pictures of the Maybelline compact powders just in case you’re wondering how they look like.

Picture

Picture

I have tried 2 different ranges of the Chanel compact powder (because my mom got the wrong one for me – but it turned out alright!). Before buying the compact powder, I was very fortunate to have a friend working in Chanel because she gave me some samples of Chanel products to try out and I’d really liked the powders 🙂

The 2 ranges of Chanel compact powder :

Picture

Picture

Picture

Picture

The white casing is Le Blanc Light Mastering Whitening Compact Foundation which has SPF 25/PA+++ while the black casing is the Vitalumiere Eclat Radiance Comfort Compact Makeup which has only SPF 10 only.

Personally, I’d prefer the whitening over the radiance one but that doesn’t mean that the latter is not good too. Both are awesome but just that I’m crazy over whitening products and hence the choice 🙂

As I have combination skin (oily T-zone), this powder although doesn’t really help much in combating the oiliness, I still like how each application is so smooth. I don’t use the brush that comes along because I prefer using sponges. I think it’s easier to control. Speaking of which, I’m not a fan of liquid foundation as well. The one and only I have tried in my entire lifetime is the Revlon liquid foundation which I decided not to venture into them anymore because of the mess and hassle they create. It gets stuck inside your nails although I agree that using your fingers allow greater control and easier application than sponges/brushes, that’s for sure. Liquid foundation looks extremely thick on my face as well.

Honestly, I don’t require one that provides excessive or thick coverage because I have naturally good skin. I don’t have acne problems and the only time I have pimples is when it’s nearing “that time of the month” but recently these few months, I realised that I don’t even have this problem now! The worst pimples problem was during my O Levels which is like eons ago (I am reminded how much I’ve aged ):) Other than that, I don’t recall any other unfortunate incidents.

The only problem I have with my faceskin is the oily T-zone (which is not that terrible and excessive) and the enlarged pores I have. Of course, and the disgusting dark circles as well! And well, I do have quite a number of moles of my face but thank god they aren’t those huge and/or hairy ones! 🙂

One more thing, Chanel compact powder has quite a pleasant scent too. Unlike the Maybelline one.

Besides not being able to solve my T-zone problem, another dissatisfaction is that the powder “runs loose” and gets all over the mirror, causing it to be dirty and blur. Time to time, I have to wipe off the remnants of the powder bits off the mirror to be able to view clearly. Quite a hassle actually.

And of course, once dropped, the compact powder would crack, just like the rest of the powders as well. I say this because I’ve dropped mine before by accident 😦

Since my other cosmetics family isn’t that expensive (I use Bourjois/K-Palette liquid eyeliner, Silkygirl duo blusher, some eyebrow pencil that my sis gave me – unsure of the brand, Canmake highlighter, Loreal concealer and Maybelline masacara), I think it is only reasonable that my compact powder which covers the largest portion of my face, can be abit more pricey? 🙂
If I’m not wrong, it is sold at $90+? My mom got it at around S$70+ from HK 🙂

**One thing which I would like to highlight that is, please babes, do get a colour of your own skin tone. I have seen so many ladies using the WRONG tone for their face and they look really awful! It should match the rest of your body and shouldn’t be whiter than them. I understand it would be icky to try the tester out especially if you have sensitive skin, but if so, you should get your products that are specially made for sensitive skin. For me, I seriously do not wish to look ridiculous mismatched with the rest of my skin, so I would take the chance and test a small portion on my face. You may want to try this out. Would be great if you have wet wipes with you at the point of time as well. 🙂

I think those whose faces are packed with layers and layers of powders is seriously a big booboo! Don’t suffocate your skin so much alright? Plus, cleaning them off thoroughly would be a hassle. You don’t have to apply layers to cover up problematic areas, just get a good concealer to do the trick!

The trick is to get the RIGHT coverage for YOUR SKIN TONE, NOT THE FAIREST OR WHITEST, unless your ambition is to be a Geisha? 😉

Beauty Reviews – Fancl Whitening Products

Picture

Picture

Bought the whitening package few months ago at around $80 to $90 (sorry for the poor memory).

Have tried the masks and essence and they are a must-try!

I love how the essence is not that oily and sticky. It has a very light feel when applied but only thing is that, it does leave residue on your face if you’d accidentally rubbed against your skin. Other than that, it is perfectly fine 🙂

The whitening masks also offer immediate whitening and brightening effect.

I’ve not tried the clear mask and the sunguard and must have chucked it to somewhere… Thank god I’d remembered if not my money would be gone to waste! =P

This whitening kit is one of the limited edition that Fancl occasionally have in their monthly promotions.

For August’s promotions, you may wanna check it out here :
http://www.fancl.com.sg/promotions.asp#15

And thank goodness I’ve not completed this set because there is a whitening and repair kit……. going for a whooping $256!!!   This Set includes:

a. White Clear Mask 15 pieces)
b. White Essence (2 bottles)
c. SunGuard 30 (15 sachets)

Heh…

Have been consuming Fancl’s whitening drink as well known as the White Advance Drink Ex. http://www.fancl.com.sg/product_detail.asp?p_id=148
Just FYI, Fancl came up with this drink way before Hakubi did. 🙂

Picture

Picture

Picture

I try not to drink it daily and spread out the frequency of consumption because it’s too expensive… 1 bottle costs around $7?

Well, previously when I’d consumed this, I couldn’t tell the effects because I believe I’ve already reached my max? Well, there is a level of fairness one can whiten their skin to if you hadn’t already know. Some people are born with naturally fair skin, like my sister. Those who know us personally can vouch for that. But then, life is just so unfair, isn’t it? My sister can’t get tanned but gets sun burnts. Whereas for me, I do get tanned and was quite tanned back in my younger (ahem) days in secondary school and JC days. I believe I was at my “tannest” after I came back from Outward Bound School (OBS) camp in JC days. Super super black chao tah charcoal with flaking of my scalp as well as peeling of skin… Okay let’s not get to there 😉

So yes, I believe I am in a better position to judge on the effects of this whitening drink now that I have some slight tan lines on my back due to my recent cycling session. It’s been weeks and the tan lines are still there! Although I believe the tan lines caused by my shorts have gradually lightened on my thighs, as well as my slipper strap markings.

All in all, I believe this drink has helped to at least lighten a little?

I take it before I go to bed but the taste is kinda icky. For those who aren’t fans of sour stuffs, you should think twice before getting this because as per Fancl’s website, it states that it is made of grapefruit and grape flavour. 🙂
As it is acidic, it might cause some discomfort in your tummy, at least for me, it did, for a few mins.

Overall rating : 3.5/5. Average only.
Will recommend this product if you are curious and want to try, but will not recommend it in the long term, although I was told that this is much more effective than the whitening pills, it wouldn’t be as cost effective compared to the pills, which cost around $40++. If you’ve not taken the drink before, do try out the drink first before getting the pills. I guess the pills act as some sort of supplement to the drink. At least this what was told to me by the Fancl staff previously 🙂

Have also tried the pills before, but compared to the Hakubi C (blue bottle) pills, the latter is slightly cheaper than the Fancl white advance pills and I have compared the ingredients and composition of both brands.

Picture

Fancl White Advance Pills :
Vitamin C 300mg
L-Cystine 240mg
Picture

Hakubi White C Pills :
L-Cystine 240mg
Vitamin C 600mg
Comparing both compositions, Hakubi wins hands down with its higher content of Vitamin C.
This vitamin is important in ensuring fair skin and skin whitening because it deactivates UV-induced free radicals and decreases erythema, in addition to acting as a tyrosinase inhibitor.

Just don’t consume excessive vitamin c (e.g. taking extra vitamin c pills for immunity booster) because too much of anything is definitely detrimental ( except for $ and love! )

Read more on excessive consumption of vitamin c and its side effects : http://heart-disease.emedtv.com/vitamin-c/vitamin-c-side-effects.html

Hope this helps! 😀
