Comments and critics of the haze and the Singapore Govt aside, let us better understand how the haze would affect our skin.
Air pollution from the haze can have the following effects on our skin:
- Smog and dust can create free radicals (highly charged oxygen molecules) when they come in touch with UV rays. Free radicals attack our cells and damage our DNA, which can cause harm to our body and damage to our skin. Free radicals are the greatest culprit to problems like discolouration, fine lines and dullness.
- The impurities in the air can also cause clogging in our skin, which in turn cause problems like blackheads, pimples, rough texture and dull complexion.
- Toxin in the air can also cause our skin to age prematurely as well as dryness.
What should you do?
Smog, fog and dust particles will form a layer on your skin for sure. The least you should do is the cleanse. On top of your daily cleansing, if you are wearing make-up, I would suggest you to cleanse twice as hard. I don’t mean to apply more pressure and taut your skin, and I don’t mean to wash your face twice at one go. What I meant is to remove your make-up twice instead of once, just to ensure that you have removed all the dirt on your skin surface, or until the cotton pad shows no signs of leftover make-up. This is especially important if you have thick make-up on e.g. liquid foundation.
I have been using this make-up cleanser for a long time and it serves me well 🙂
L’Oreal Gentle Cleansing Milk :
And for my eye make-up, I use Cyber Colours Gentle Eye Make-up Remover :
Psst, it’s really good! 🙂
After removing your makeup, here comes the cleansing part with a facial cleanser.
Should you switch to another facial cleanser? I would recommend you to consider getting cleansers which are suitable for daily exfoliation.
You may consider getting Biore Facial Foam Scrub or Bio-Essence Deep Exfoliating Gel which I reviewed earlier.
Keep your moisturising in check. Helps to hydrate your skin during this hot and dry weather. Drink more water to help replenish water loss and prevent dehydration. Also to help keep cell metabolism optimal. Not forgetting the sun block – choose one with at least SPF 30 and one that helps to block both UVA and UVB.
For sunblock, I’m using Sunplay SKIN Aqua UV Moisture Milk SPF50 PA+++.
For moisturisers, I’m currently using a mixture :
Skin & Lab Mont-Blanc Glacial Water Drop (I will be posting up a review on this soon)
I use this in the morning before applying my make-up because it’s very light and non-oily at all. Easily absorbed and lesser waiting time before I can apply my make-up over.
This is richer and more creamy, with added anti-ageing properties, it helps combat wrinkles and fine lines too.
Use products with high anti-oxidants
Anti-oxidants ingredients include vitamin A (retinoic acid), vitamin C, vitamin B (niacinamide), vitamin E, green tea and soy protein. All these aid and improve skin cell turnover and skin health, as well as combat free radicals.
Other ingredients to look out for include hyaluronic acid – it is an internal building block for collagen in the skin and aids in binding water molecules together, increasing the plumpness of the skin and hydrating it – as well as emollients such as shea butter for drier areas.
Try Skin & Lab’s vitamin creams, targetting different problems.
Also, stock up on those fresh hot green tea. They have abundant anti-oxidant ingredients too. Hence, Japanese are always topping the charts for their best skin quality. 🙂
Chock up on supplements esp Vitamin C
Needless to say, you need to strength to fight out all the harmful free radicals and whatnots. So start consuming your supplements or better still, get them fresh from the original sources e.g. food/fruits.
Since you can’t head out due to the haze (I am extremely appalled that Singaporeans are still queuing for Mc Kitty, smoking and chilling outdoors at this point of time!), why not catch more sleep? Inadequate rest means that your body has little time to repair and recharge. Get enough sleep and your skin will thank you for it.
All in all, health comes before anything else. Do stay indoors where possible and keep yourself hydrated at all times! Take care everyone! ❤
