Singapore’s Overpopulation

For those looking out for reviews, be it beauty or food, lifestyle etc, I’m sorry but this entry might bore you, unless you’re keen in what I’m gonna say, which you can already guess based on the title above.

On a side note, I was asked, what do I blog about during an event I attended yesterday. All along, I try to blog whatever readers are interested in. I was also advised by a fellow blogger that if I were to digress and blog about other issues, I would lose my readers. But nevertheless, I’ve decided that I should blog on whatever I’m interested in too or just issues that I would like to get off my chest. I believe this offers a somewhat personal touch with my readers, rather than just plain old boring reviews reviews and more reviews.

So here goes.

Everyday, I would take the bus to work. An hour bus ride approximately. And everyday, I head home (when I do) via the same mode of transport as well. I don’t own a car, although I would very much like to get one (but the new regulations which would kick back in – requiring 40-50% downpayment in cash definitely deters me from getting one). Most importantly, I would like to get a car AND  a driver. I need a package.

Riding on public transports definitely conveys a message to everyone, especially during the peak hours – Singapore is already overpopulated.

That is besides the point whereby the Govt intends to reach to  increase its total population from 5.3 million to 6.9 million by 2030 as conveyed via its White Paper. This is despite being the third-most densely populated country in the world.

Statistics aside, based on our daily lives and judgment, don’t we already see the repercussions?

Looking at the traffic congestion as well as the myriads of crowds every morning, I empathize AND sympathize with our fellow Singaporeans.

While stoning on the way to work this morning, it suddenly dawned upon me that even if the Govt does everything to relieve the problems faced by high demands due to overpopulation. Surely, there is one thing that even the richest man in Singapore is willing to pay but unable to, would be land space. No doubt, the Govt may be able to import the other essentials in life needed for survival, food, water etc since it is a well-known fact that we have promising huge reserves at the back end. And I acknowledge the fact that the Govt, in particular HDB, has plans and reserved lands for future housing demands, but once all these lands are used up, what should be the next step?

As it is, there are already implemented policies on burial of corpses which limit the number of years for the remains to stay and some cemeteries have encountered a reclamation of land, digging up corpses and remains. But how much more can we reclaim? These areas might not even be able to meet the rising housing needs in time to come.

When all else fails, what should the Govt do?

2 suggestions popped into my mind during the contemplation process.

  1. Demolish all private and landed properties, studio apartments and whatever housing buildings that are low-rise (perhaps less than 30 storeys). Of course, this is gonna upset the rest and not all areas can withstand high-rise buildings. Analysing the bed rock is essential, which also limits this suggestion.
  2. Since there are little islands which belong to us, e.g. Pulau Ubin (Don’t forget the recent announcement by the Govt in imposing rents on the residents), Tekong, Hantu etc, perhaps we can use them and try to relieve the pain?

Whatever it is, land scarcity is definitely a challenge in meeting one of the necessities in life – a roof over our heads.

Okay, enough of my ranting.

The event I mentioned in the earlier part of this entry post was the exclusive blogger media event for the launching of Tsubaki’s New Shampoo Products which I would share with you guys soon! So do keep a lookout! :)

It’s the Canon Powershot G1X. I had to decide between this and a Canon DSLR 650D, but had my reasons in choosing the former over the latter. I would blog about it some time soon in deciding whether to get a DSLR or not. At least for me, not for now.
